The shape of the time domain waveform is not important in these signals; the key information is in the frequency, phase and amplitude of the component sinusoidal.
The DFT is used to extract this information.
DFT is better over DTFT becz it gives discrete output in both time and frequency domain so DFT(advance DCT) is mostly use for data compression
